A photofacial is a skin treatment that is performed using a light-based technology to remove brown spots and broken capillaries. This treatment also improves the appearance of blemishes and helps achieve a rejuvenated skin appearance, as this technology mainly aims to remove dark pigmentation issues from deep inside the skin. Photofacial also reduces uneven skin discoloration and imparts a natural glow to the skin with an even-toned smooth skin texture. Your results will depend on your skin type and the specific problem you’re treating. This treatment is also useful in removing vascular marks like port wine stains and spider veins.
There are two types of photofacials, namely intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacials, and light-emitting diode (LED) photofacials. Each type has its own set of benefits and side effects. The treatment takes around 30-90 minutes depending on the type of photofacial, the location and the expert who performs it. There might be slight redness and swelling but it gets healed on its own within 24 hours. You will see improvement gradually after getting this treatment done. Here are the two types of photofacials:
LED (Light-Emitting Diode) – This technology uses a narrow spectrum of light to stimulate the growth of collagen in your skin, helping restore a younger, healthier-looking appearance. Apart from increasing collagen production, the LED laser can neutralize free radicals, reduce sun damage, improve fine lines, reduce pores, minimize redness, and improve the overall appearance of your complexion. LED facials can also be used to eliminate acne-causing bacteria. This type of facial is painless and carries no risk of burning.
The LED photofacial working procedure differs from IPL. It uses different types of light that work on different aspects of skin concerns.
Red light accelerates cell activity, boosts collagen production, lightens the blemishes, repairs skin damage caused by free radicals, and reduces enlarged open pores, and tender skin wrinkles.
Blue light helps reduce inflammation, kills the acne-causing bacteria (antibacterial activity), removes skin sores, and repairs the skin.
Greenlight reduces excess skin oil secretion, balances the skin hydration levels, clears the lymphatic drainage, and also promotes skin detoxification.
Yellow light improves cell oxygen exchange, breaks down excess skin pigmentation, improves rough skin texture, reduces wrinkles, and also enhances skin immunity.
IPL photofacial is also known as Pulsed Light Therapy and involves the usage of a manually handled device that produces pulses of broad-spectrum light through direct contact with the skin. It has a major impact on the deeper layers of the skin, making it one of the most preferred treatments for broken capillaries, sunspots, & other problems. If you have more serious skin conditions that affect deeper layers of skin, Intense-pulsed light (IPL) treatments might be an ideal procedure for you. In this treatment, it requires a blast of light at intense pulses, outside the bandwidth of the laser, that goes deep into the skin's second layer (dermis) without affecting the top layer. For this type of photofacial, you might have to go for several sessions after every 3-4 weeks, as suggested by the professional.
During the procedure, the skin area is cleaned, and then the protective eye gear is provided to protect the eyes from the bright flashes of light. Cooling gel and numbing cream are applied. This can helps to cool the epidermis and help manage the discomfort of this treatment. Then the specialist will apply the pulses of light to the skin with the help of a handpiece. One may feel a warm sensation on their skin during the treatment, and the number of pulses provided depends upon the type of concern that is being treated. After the treatment, some redness may occur, and this usually fades away within a few weeks.

Photo Rejuvenation or photofacial effectively treats red and brown pigmentation such as sun spots, brown spots and facial telangiectasia while improving the skin’s texture and tone. It is primarily used for skin imperfections such as freckles and sun spots, but it also improves the overall skin complexion.
Immediately following your Photorejuvenation treatment, brown spots and discolorations will start to darken and your skin may appear slightly pink. This typically lasts a few hours to possibly a few days. During a time span of one to three weeks after your Photorejuvenation treatment, the darkened spots will flake off and/or fade and facial capillaries or diffused redness will decrease. Photo rejuvenation is suitable for skin types I through IV.
Individual Results May Vary. However, a series of 3-5 treatments is scheduled. Each treatment takes less than one hour to perform. Treatments are scheduled approximately three weeks apart. A series of treatments will take about fifteen weeks to complete.
Before you book for photofacial. One must stop night creams containing retinol or glycolic acid agents at least one week before the procedure. Make sure that you are regular with your sunscreen application before the procedure. They don't require much preparation actually which is another benefit.
You will experience a slight sensation as the pulses of therapeutic light are passed over your skin like mild pinch or sting. The sensation is very mild and easily tolerated. Topical anesthetic creams are not required but are available for individuals who wish to numb the skin.
Maintenance treatments are recommended. It means the improvement that has been achieved following first series of treatments can be maintained by occasional single maintenance treatments.
