What is Aging?

It is first necessary to understand what is meant by aging. Our body is made of cells that multiply to replace themselves – thus, old and dead skin cells are shed and newer ones come take their place. This continuous process of natural rejuvenation however, is not forever. Cells come with a time limit on how many times they can multiply. As our body grows older, our ability to repair the wear and tear of skin cells also slows down. Thus, collagen loosens, fine lines and wrinkles start setting in and the process of aging starts showing on our skin.

Slow Down Aging

Signs of aging do not only include fine lines and wrinkles but also dark spots, pigmentation, sun damage, uneven texture and tone. Here are seven self remedial ways in which you can slow down visibly aging skin and keep yourself healthier and happier for longer.

1. A Healthy Diet

The food we put into our bodies directly affects the way we look, age and feel in the time to come. It is thus important to keep your diet in check. Ensure you have sufficient intake of vitamins and minerals. Vitamins A, E and C all have anti-ageing benefits. Their antioxidant properties also greatly help in keeping in shape. Ensure to include probiotics, minerals, and mineral rich food groups in your diet. They help boost collagen production and keep the skin rejuvenated from within. Food groups rich in zinc and selenium also come highly recommended. Foods like fruits, nuts and berries, green leafy vegetables and fibers like oatmeal all have proven to be beneficial to skin health.

2. Exercise

Exercise not only keeps the body fit but also the mind young. Significant boosts in hormonal levels keep the signs of aging at bay. Improvement in mood and movement are signs of good health we must adhere to.

3. Sun Care

Overexposure to the sun affects our skin greatly, and is one of the most common of causes across a variety of skin related issues. Damage to the skin from exposure to the sun can result in sunspots, discoloration, wrinkles and even affect the texture of your skin! Taking proper measures when going out into the sun is very important. It is recommended that one uses sunscreen when going out, especially in climates with high levels of heat. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Remember to apply the sunscreen around 20 minutes before you leave to go outside. If you are undertaking activities such as swimming, hiking etc. you might find the need to put on sunscreen more frequently during the day. In general, sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours for maximum protection. One can also wear protective clothing to prevent sun damage to the skin. Long brimmed hats, sunglasses, long-sleeved tops, long pants or long skirts are all good options. Remember to avoid tight fitted clothing, and to wear material that does not aggravate your skin, like cotton.

4. Retinoids

Often a part of one’s skin care routine, retinoids are one of the leading compounds in ensuring preservation of healthy skin. Vitamin A compounds like tretinoin and retinol are often used to boost collagen production. They help in keeping fine lines and wrinkles at bay, along with treating various skin conditions. Retinoids do their part in boosting skin rejuvenation and help in production of newer skin cells.

5. Vitamin C

Already a major component of our diet, vitamin C is often recommended to reverse aging. It can be topically applied, ingested via diet or taken as a supplement. Regardless, this vitamin is a natural antioxidant, gives protection to your skin, and boosts elasticity and collagen production.

Skin Care Routine

Invest in a thorough and proper skin care routine. We recommend you consult your dermatologist on the same. They will help you work out products best suited to your skin type and your daily needs to ensure maximum protection and rejuvenation. Often, minerals and vitamins can be added to your skin via your skin care routine aka through external application. Skin care routines also ensure you take care to moisturize and hydrate your skin appropriately – a step often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of life. Including essential oils and massages in your routine will only boost your wellness!

7. Lifestyle Changes

Our fast paced lives have us adopting various measures to cope. Smoking and consumption of alcohol are some of the leading causes of early signs of degeneration of our skin cells. They obstruct the healthy production of newer skin cells and do not support collagen production. Prolonged use of either damages our health and brings about drastic changes in appearance. Our skin becomes sallow, dull and lifeless due to the effect of nicotine and alcohol and we begin to appear older than we look.

Just because aging cannot be clinically reversed does not mean it cannot be slowed down. Conscious steps taken to ensure your wellness will help with battling premature aging and all the worries it brings.
