Causes of Hyperpigmentation of the Lips

Hyperpigmentation of the lips can be caused by inflammatory diseases, allergic reactions, physiological causes, trauma, genetic markup, hormonal changes, smoking, melasma, medication, and other non-melatonin related issues.

Other causes include sun exposure, allergic reactions to makeup and cosmetics, dehydration, excess caffeine, and sucking of the lips. If you suffer from anaemia, have a vitamin deficiency or use fluoride excessively, you may be susceptible to hyperpigmentation of the lips.

Although there are a variety of reasons for the hyperpigmentation of the lips, the good news is that the condition is treatable. Lifestyle changes like reducing caffeine, drinking more water, quitting smoking, using sunscreen and lip balm, checking for allergies etc. all help with countering the darkening of the lips.

Besides these natural remedies, procedural options also exist for those looking for a more professional approach to the darkening of their lips.

Q Switch Laser Toning

Laser treatment has proven to be on the rise due to its non-invasive nature, with proven benefits and results. The laser beam emits a specific degree of energy that directly works on the targeted site.

Laser treatment for dermatological conditions involves selective photothermolysis, where the beam targets specific chromophores in the affected area which need repairing. These chromophores absorb the directed energy. This then allows for the area to heat up, promoting collagen production and restoring the skin’s ability to heal.

Laser toning involves targeting the deep-set damage in one’s skin layers. At Celestee, the procedure is done through Q-Switch Laser, which is precise, secure, safe, and highly effective.

By only targeting the areas affected, and promoting them to heat up, the procedure encourages our lip’s skin cells to actively work on the damage, making it a gentle yet effective procedure. The procedure also stimulates blood flow, promoting the return of natural suppleness to your lips by reactivating skin cells. It is important to avail the treatment only from trained experts.

Effects of Laser Toning and Post-procedure Care

Positive results can be seen from the very first session of laser toning itself. Laser toning is usually done across three to four sessions, once every three to four weeks. For best results, many opt for sessions once every two to three months after the initial process. Laser toning does not hurt, as it is a non-surgical procedure. You may feel a slight pricking sensation due to the laser. Any redness due to this fades within a couple of hours.

One can easily continue with their day once the procedure is complete, free from the fear of scarring as well. Mild swelling and bruising are common and may sometimes occur, but it is temporary and goes away on its own in some time. Celestee’s team of experienced dermatologists take the utmost care to provide you with all the necessary information regarding care after the procedure.

Lip Peels

Lip peels, or chemical peels are well suited to stimulate collagen and reignite fullness in your lips. Given that the skin on the lips is very thin and sensitive, it is important to note the kind of chemical peel you use. The aim is to not disrupt the pH balance of the skin and to ensure that the acid used in the peel is not one that is corrosive to the level of damage.

Acids like lactic 50, mandelic, and glycolic acid are the safest to use regarding lip peels. However, exercise caution nonetheless. The lip peel should NOT cause more flaking, drying, irritation or cracking.

Before you use the lip peel, ensure you wipe your lips clean of any makeup, ointment, leftover oils etc. Remember that your lips are made of an inner portion and an outer portion. The inner portion is where we begin to enter the mouth and it will thus be moist; we DO NOT want the acid to enter your mouth. Apply your peel very carefully to only the outer region.

Remove the peel after two to three minutes of application – based on the acid you choose to use. Rinse your lips thoroughly with cold water and do not lick your lips immediately. Apply a cream or ointment to lock in the moisturization. Products with hyaluronic acid or Aquaphor are good choices. One can also choose petroleum jelly. Space out your use of peels by atleast 2 weeks. Too frequent of use will damage your lips’ skin.

Home Remedies for Lip Pigmentation

You may make a homemade scrub with lemon peel, lime and sugar. The anti-melatonin properties in the citrus will help with the pigmentation. Turmeric as well as aloe vera gel also have similar anti-melatonin properties.

Acetic acid and red onion, both contain elements that help in lightening skin tone. Mix acetic acid with water and gently dab it onto your lips before washing it clean. You can use red onions directly onto the skin of your lips or look for products containing Allium cepa.

Hyperpigmentation of the lips is a cosmetic concern that usually goes away if given time and if lifestyle changes are incorporated. With regards to medical procedures, consult your dermatologist to determine the right approach to your issue.
